Ocado joins in the fun

Today I received an email from Ocado (the online delivery arm of Waitrose) telling me all about their bag recycling facility, not only that, they are recycling biodegradable bags, as that is all they use in their delivery service.

I am in the process of finding out what their bags are made from, but generally I think they should be applauded for switching to biodegradable bags and recycling them.

PS You may have seen the organic cotton bags for sale in Sainsbury’s, excellent to see them joining in too, but please bear in mind ours are just as ethical, quite a bit bigger and 50p cheaper :-)

China is going plastic bag free

China is about to ban the plastic bag.

“Plastic shopping bags, due to reasons such as excessive use and inefficient recycling, have caused serious energy and resources waste and environment pollution,” says the State Council, China’s cabinet.

Its an ironic twist to the fact that petrol has now reached $100 a barrel. It means the cost of producing the plastic bag has just gone up. China has been swift to take action.

Progress or gesture?

I was in Sainsbury’s yesterday and noticed that their organic spuds are now encased in compostable bags (I had a feel and they feel like cornstarch) which is great and certainly a step in the right direction.

It does beg one small question though, if they can do that for the organic spuds why can’t they also do it for all the fruit and veg in their shops? I suppose I could be generous of spirit so early in the new year and assume it is the start of move towards wrapping all their greengrocery in compostable plastic……

Then again it could be a nod towards doing something and could be seen as a bit of greenwash, only time will tell!
